Letter From Home: The Huntley Horn

I’m proud to announce the arrival of another book in the Etsy Shop:

Letters from Home: The Huntley Horn 1944-1946 compiled and edited by Margie Raben Jones.

You can now own a small part of Wyoming history from World War II (that also includes some of my family history).

This compilation of weekly letters sent out to servicemen and women from the Huntley area, a small farming community south of Torrington, WY, is a fascinating read. My grandparents owned the general store where news about the various servicemen came in. For the community’s benefit, they put out a bulletin board where anyone could post new information about the boys overseas.

My grandma Lyndall Raben, along with her friends Esther Terry and Florence Jepson decided to gather the addresses and start sending out a weekly newsletter of hometown happenings.

The postage was raised by donations from the community in the small cast iron bank that sat on the counter. If they were short, a local businessman made up the difference to make sure the letters continued to go out.

They included the addresses received so the boys could also keep in touch with each other and possibly meet if they happened to have the opportunity.

My mother compiled the letters and had one printing done in the mid 1990s. We still have some copies and it just made sense to add these to the Etsy shop.

This is a rare find full of war time life in Wyoming as well as some valuable genealogy tidbits.

Some of the remaining copies are now available for purchase.
