A few favorite photos
Happy Friday, everyone! Today I want to take a bit of time to share some of the stories behind the photos in my gallery.

Beehive Rainbow 2007
There are many opportunities to catch rainbows in the spray from the geysers. This is one of my favorite rainbow photos for Beehive Geyser. It was taken in October – the month in which I often capture lovely rainbow photos. There weren’t many people in the park that shoulder-season day. And it was a magnificent day of warm weather with just a hint of chill on the breeze, reminding us that winter wasn’t far off. A grizzly bear was hanging out near Geyser Hill, causing the boardwalk’s closure from time to time. So, when the call came out on the radio that Beehive’s Indicator was erupting, I headed toward the Beehive Overlook that gave a spectacular bit of lighting on the scene. As the eruption climbed, the spray began to be carried by the wind. The rainbow grew as the spray spread farther along the boardwalk. There were several lovely captures from this eruption, but this one is my favorite.
Biscuit Basin Bison
It was one of the first days of the summer season when the temperatures were still cold, and the sky threatened to spit snow. While checking on the various geyser basins, at Biscuit Basin, three bison hung out. While walking uphill on the boardwalk, this bison walked downhill directly toward me. Using a zoom lens, I was able to capture a few images before he turned direction. This is one of my best sellers and one of my favorites. I’ve presented this photo as a Digital Photo Watercolor – where using three different software programs, a pen and time, I transform the photo into a digital watercolor painting. While taken as a vertical image, I love it best when cropped square.
Yellowstone’s Geyser Hill
As those of you who have followed me for a while now know that I love aerial photography. I love to fly and take photos, and I get lost for hours, just staring at the images. These photos print the best large – to get lost in the details. Of all the photos I’ve taken from the air, I keep coming back to this one of Geyser Hill. It was taken on a rather tight turn with the lens zoomed in. I would take a shot, realize it cut out too much, then back the lens out a bit and shoot again. Aerial photography is fast work. But when I released the shutter for this image, I knew I had it – the one I hoped for. Upon processing it, I find myself appreciating it on so many levels. I love the way the morning frost highlighted the boardwalk as well as the wonder that creeps in knowing the time it took for this amazing patch of Earth to develop to this point. Geysers and hot springs have been here for at least 10,000 years. You can see the large round mound that’s a remnant of something that must have been spectacular to see in its day. How lucky we are to have geysers that are left to their natural rhythm to watch, study, and enjoy. I plan to get this one printed on metal as it should just pop like crazy on that surface.
Thank you to those who have already placed orders or purchased a print from the Cody gallery where my work is displayed – Open Range Images. If there are images you’ve seen here on the blog that you might like to have a print, just get in touch.
